There has been
a new addition to the already numerous Rocca delle Macìe
family. The Consorzio Produttori Vini di Manduria, based in the
Puglia region, is one of the most long-standing wineries within
the delineated zone of production (DOC) for Primitivo. From now
on, the Puglian producer can count on the consolidated network
of Rocca delle Macìe for the distribution of the following
wines - Lirica, Madrigale, Elegia, Memoria and Calice. “Rocca
delle Macìe is very much a forward-looking organization,”
affirms Sergio Zingarelli, “and our commitment to improvement
and expansion has been clearly shown in recent years. The cellars
have been modernized and the vineyards renewed, and - as is evident
from the ever-increasing number of accolades we are receiving
from the critics – the all-important quality of our wines
is on the increase year after year. This focus on quality led
us to look closely at the Puglia region, since the producers there
set out on the path towards qualitative improvement quite some
time ago. The crucial elements in our decision to embark on this
collaborative venture with the Consorzio Produttori Vini di Manduria
were our common love of the land, and of the vine and its fruits,
alongside our shared commitment to combine the greatest respect
for tradition and terroir on the one hand, with state-of-the-art
technologies and highly advanced viticultural research on the
other.
The Consortium was formed in 1932, thanks to the initiative of
a group of smallholders, who recognized the tremendous potential
of Primitivo, the principal grape variety of their area. It was
one of their number, Don Menotti Schiavoni, who, according to
the earliest reliable records, first bottled Primitivo, in 1891.
Today, 375 growers contribute their precious grapes to the Consortium,
safe in the knowledge that the grapes will be vinified with the
same love and care with which they are cultivated. “We are
flattered,” beams Fulvio Filo Schiavoni, President of the
Consortium, “that Rocca delle Macìe has given its
seal of approval to our professionalism by considering us the
most well-qualified producer - in terms of our respect for tradition
and focus on quality - of that rising star of red winemaking in
Salento, Primitivo di Manduria. The friendliness of Rocca della
Macìe’s approach from the outset was extremely important,
as was the ease with which we could learn from each other and
collaborate effectively in a mutually beneficial synergy. We consider
ourselves to be the custodians of an ancient tradition that Rocca
delle Macìe is helping us to protect and bring to a wider
public”.
