Around two months
ago, work got underway on the preparation of the soil for the
planting of a new vineyard within the winery’s original
estate of Le Macìe. Following the removal of the old vines,
after the harvest of 2002, the vineyard will have remained fallow
for over a year before the planting of the new vines, set to take
place in the first two months of 2004. The new vineyard will cover
a slightly greater area than its predecessor - which actually
included the two hectares already given over to vine cultivation
when Italo Zingarelli purchased Le Macìe as a farm back
in 1973 - and will have for the most part a south, south-westerly
orientation (with only a fraction facing north). To take advantage
of this excellent exposure, the vineyard will be planted with
several clones of Sangiovese, and (to a lesser extent) Merlot,
with a vine density of 5,600 plants per hectare. The new vineyard
will also benefit from an irrigation system, which – given
the dry summers of recent years - could prove useful during the
first three years in the lives of vines that are not yet in production,
and also in times of drought when emergency irrigation is required.
